This I Believe Cole Hawkins
I believe someone is changed because of choices that people around them make, but does that mean someone is never really their own person. I think it is for everyone to decide for himself or herself. People can take these experiences and make themselves better. Experience is what makes use what we are either something bad or something good. Because there’s not enough time to experience these things and then forgive its what makes us who we are. The bad things that happened to us can make you greater than what was expected because we are defined by accomplishment.
I was seven when two 8th graders I never saw before grabbed me and took my dog. I started punching the kid that was holding me, I hit him in the ear, and he let go for a second. The other kid put my dog down and grabbed me while the other kid tied me up with dog leash and punched me in the face a couple of times. After they left me there I remembered my Pocket Knife and cut the leash. I was so furious it was like all I could see was red. I ran after them with my nose gushing blood. I was yelling at them to give my dog back. They saw the knife in my hand and told me to “drop it”, but I had never felt so angry. I started yelling at them to give my dog back so finally they did gave my dog back. Then I ran reluctantly to go tell my mom what happened and after I told her she went to find the boys. When she did she sat them down and started angrily yelling at them, and one started to cry because of all she had to say. I’ll never forget that day; even I was scared of my mom at that moment.
Since that day I have always carried a pocketknife and it has let me be more cautious of people and for me to grow up fast and see the world different. I hope to be a better person than what those boys were, to be a good person especially to others.
Everyone has different experiences and it is up to each of us to use that experience to make us better and learn from it or it let it bring us down.

Project Reflection Cole Hawkins
In the “This I Believe” assignment first we went over what other people believe then brainstormed different things that we believe, remembering things that might have made us believe this or change an opinion. The thing that really helped me was listening to other peoples “This I believe” and hearing how they felt. We were required to use narrative coherence by writing a logical and flowing essay. I used communal relevance by telling personal experiences that might connect others to there own experiences, and though those experiences authentic voice was heard.
The challenge I found with this process is coming up with the ideas. I tried to make it personal by telling my experiences and how it changed me. I brainstormed by trying different styles and how I wanted to start my essay. I also tried to remember things that have stuck with me for a long time. The Habit of Heart and mind that helped me in creating this piece was relevance, because I had to apply it to my life now.
I am very proud of how I connected my experiences from my past to my life now. It was here that communal relevance presented its self in my paper. “The bad things that happened to us can make you greater than what was expected because we are defined by accomplishment.”
I think to make it sound better I need to use better vocabulary. Also, there are always things I need to work with spelling and grammar. I need to work on sentence craft and proofreading. My goal is to more fluent writer.
This conversation has influenced my thinking as a member of the human community by making me recognize that other people have experiences that change them. It’s good to believe in what you are learning and how you are as a person and it’s made me appreciate peoples’ opinions and how it can make you think more.

my friend by Cole Hawkins
When I was eight years old my friend and I
First went in the woods
We went everywhere together
He protected me from dangers
He showed me respect for the delicacy of life
As we grew our skill was refined
I could rely on my friend meeting me half way
I was only as good as we were together
Listening for anything out there
There was a protection in our being together
There have been those who say my friend is no good for me
They believe he causes pain and destruction
My friend has never hurt a human being
Maybe they are talking about someone else’s friend
Someone who doesn’t understand the value of life
People that don’t understand my friend
Want to keep us apart
They fear the damage others have caused
But I know it is not my friend
It’s people who abuse the power he has
People need a friend to keep them safe
From others that abuse relationships
My friend is not a human
He is not what you think
He is my firearm
It is people who do not understand the value of a firearm
That want to take my friend away
They have no experience no concept of what this means
They have not walked in the woods with us
They have not learned the respect
It is not my firearm that is the problem
It is the abuse of his capability
That makes people afraid

Reflection
Cole Hawkins
I stated this project thinking that I was going to give my idea but my idea was the same as every body else I wanted to give a different perspective. I showed that I am a gun owner and if my gun is taken away that you’re taking my friend and if you have not grown up with guns then you should not be telling me what I should do with mine.
It about how our perspective on the problems have chosen and talk about why we think it is a problem and what the other side to the argument is and see what the solution is for instants my problem
I leaned about how people think and to give them a different perspective can really change how they see your argument I really just wanted to tell a different perspective and see if I could change what people think about guns.
I found this project hard trying to come up with what I wanted to see if I could change people perspective or strengthen it, it was really hard to come up with a way to show people an idea without telling them what you’re arguing.
I leaned that every person has a different perspective and there’s a lot of people that want to take a way their own American rights and a lot of students had to be only two arguments but I tried to give them another one and as an American I want to be able to give my perspective cause should keep my rights.
