tiwanaku
My story
I woke up this morning to
someone calling my name. “Anton, Anton the wise man.”It was a messenger from Tiwanaku. His message was that the people of Tiwanaku needed a reminder of what needs to be done, and he needed to restore their faith in their god and in their leaders. I was to come and to give my counsel. He said that I should come quick. I was hesitant at first but I thought it was the best for the people. I agree. I started my journey after saying goodbye to my family. I wanted to stay and not just take the risk of my family being left without my protection because my journey takes me over a massive desert to fulfill my duties. I'll have to leave even though I don't want to. I have to take my supplies with me there will be dangers on my way. Many people have lost their lives crossing this desert. I will have no companions traveling with me so I must be extra careful. |
On the third day of my
journey it was getting hot, so I decided to walk in the crevice of a mountain to get out of the sun. It is late afternoon. I was walking with my supplies almost depleted. I looked up to the sun. I felt dehydrated and started to feel very flush and nauseous. Then everything got dark. When I woke up I felt a sharp pain in my side. I'd fallen onto a tree root and it gouged my side. It was not bleeding too badly but the pain was excruciating. I started to get thirsty. I had water jug with me, but to get it, I'll have to pull out the root. As I started to pull nothing happened at first, then I felt a quick tug and the root came out. As I limped to move the water jug I noticed my side started to bleed so I covered it with my hand to stop the bleeding. I started to drink from the water jug. It tasted hot and sour. It had gone rotten. I knew I was closer to Tiwanaku than my home village so I decided to press on. After a few miles, the blood from the wound was trickling down my leg. I had no way to stop it from bleeding. I could smell the wound in the scorching heat, like rotting flesh. As I looked up. I could see a mountain in the distance. Then I realized it was not mountain but a wall. was the wall of Tiwanaku built for the Sun god. I was finally there. As I entered the city I could see the great pyramid before me. I collapse due to blood loss. I woke up in the home of the medicine man, who was burning a drug to knock me out. As soon as it took effect he sealed the wound with a hot piece of bronze. As I opened my eyes and, I saw the bright sun. I could smell roasting maize and see the bright vibrant colors of the people's clothing. I tried to stand up but my legs could not hold my weight. I finally gave up. I saw that there was some food left out on a plate next to me. I started eating the cooked guinea pig because I was so hungry, but I ate so fast I threw it up. I realized my stomach was not used to eating. |

seminar reflection
I think the most interesting idea
we had was when someone said, “we keep making things to make life easier.” If
people rely on something like soma to take away their pain, could our needs be
used against us in the long run? The commercials show things that make watering
flowers easier—that's a small thing, but in our world, could we start to rely on
things a little too much, like technology?
Everyone relies on the system of
Ford, and everybody needs soma. They use soma to control the people, because the
people are conditioned not to feel pain, and soma takes away that pain. Someone
brought up the connection between Brave New World and the movie Wall-E. The
connection was that
life is controlled and constantly
made easy. People start to rely on those things because they don't know how to
live without them. Some jobs are based on technology, so if your computer crashed
and you didn't have it backed up, you could lose your job. For instance, some
guy committed suicide because his blackberry died.
Do you think people will be come
so reliant on certain things to make life easier? Could it happen in our
world?
Quote:
“'Why don't you leave me alone?'
There was almost plaintive note in his anger.”
In our world people would not want
him to be hitting himself. That would be weird. If John was in our world he
would realize that we do have pain. In Brave New World they eliminated pain and
everyone was throwing soma and drugs at John to make him calm down.
I was most proud of my connection
I had with a movie and how we try make thing easier in our life. I connected
the movie Wall-E with everyone becoming reliant on the robots doing all the
work. They kept thinking “We can't go home yet”, but they actually could. One
robot was corrupting the entire system. Ford's idea changed the entire system in
Brave New World.
THE FENCE
PAGE 1 The car drove away, and I was left alone. All my mom told me was, “Will, don’t do anything I wouldn't want you to do.” So I started to walk in the woods. I like the woods. I came to an opening in a field, and there was a fence in the middle of the field. “That’s weird,” I thought to myself. PAGE 2 FRAME 1 W: “Hey.” B: [look of surprise] FRAME 2 W: “Whats up?” B: [Looks UP] FRAME 3 W: [thought bubble: “That's weird!”] “What's your name? B: “Bernard. What's yours?” FRAME 4 W: “Will. Why are you behind that fence?” B: “'Cause I'm not supposed to be over there. No one is allowed over there.” FRAME 5 W: “Why not?” B: “I don’t know.” PAGE 3 W: “Hmm... your clothes look really new.” Bernard looks at Will from head to toe. B: “Yes of course! I throw out the old clothes and buy new ones.” Will looks down at his worn shoes. W: “My clothes are hand-me-downs from my brother.” Embarrassed, Will decided to change the subject. “My brother is off at college.” PAGE 4 B: “What's a brother?” W: “You don't know what a brother is?” B: “Oh, like a twin?” W “No, we look nothing alike! He was born before me.” B: “Oh” W: “We're blood related, and we are in the same family” B: “You didn't come from a bottle? I was born from a bottle.” W: “No, I was born from my mother! So was my brother. He has the same mother as me. But our dads are different.” PAGE 5 B: “Whats it like having a mom and dad?” W: “Its okay.” B: “What do they do?” |
W: “My mom and dad help me get up in the morning,
help me go to school, and make me breakfast. Its like being held, I feel safe when I'm with my family.” B: “Really, that's what its like to have a family?” W: “Having a family.... it's warm. Its having all that love around you. That's whats so great!” Bernard walked away feeling a need, he had an empty feeling inside. “Maybe all that I've been taught is wrong”. PAGE 6. W: “Do you want to meet my parents and play video games?” B: “I guess?” W: “Okay. Cool.” B: “What does that mean?” W: “It means awesome or outstanding.” B: “Oh.” Bernard felt like he was starting to understand this other world he was learning about. When they arrived at Will's house they decided to not tell Will's mom about how they met. PAGE 7 W: “Hi mom, this is my friend Bernard.” M: “Hi Bernard.” B: “Hello.” W: “We're going in my room.” M: “Okay! Hey! I need my hug today.” W: “Okay.” Bernard watches as they give each other a hug. It might have been small to Will but it was beautiful to Bernard. Bernard saw how Will's mom was so kind and loving. It made him realize that he wanted to be a part of that! PAGE 8 That night Will and Bernard promised each other that they would bring something from each of their worlds the next day. Will said he would bring fireworks. Bernard wanted to bring Soma. They met at the fence. W: “Hi Bernard.” B: “Hi Will. Did you bring your fireworks?” W: “Oh, shoot I forgot.” B: “Oh.” W: “I'm sorry, I can run back.” B: “No that’s alright, I brought my soma.” W: “What is that stuff any way.” B: “It makes you feel happy.” The two boys shared the soma and spent the rest of the afternoon talking. Will thought to himself, “Wow! This could really solve people's problems!” Then he realized that he couldn't get up. He felt numb. He felt useless. He felt like he couldn't care. Meanwhile... Bernard was still feeling disappointed that Will forgot the firecracker. It was a new feeling. He never felt it back in his world, but he liked it. It was interesting. [The next day, at the fence.] PAGE 9 W: Dude! Check this out! I got mini-dynamite! B: That's...cool...? [firework goes off] B: [fireworks surprise face] PAGE 10 The two boys climb on top of the hill and see a city. Looking out over the city, Bernard says “I want to be a part of your world. I want to have a mother.” |
